This is a prototype – the first garden suite designed by Fabrication Studio for a friend. The idea was to show people that a very small house could still be something beautiful and worthwhile. When garden suites were legalized in Toronto (2022) many had skepticism about the kinds of projects that would arise. This was understandable – many developers had been making small condominiums designed to produce high turnover (much like the uncomfortable furniture in a fast food restaurant that forces people to leave). Here, we tried to show that within a 600 square foot footprint, you could make something beautiful worth staying in.
